President Roosevelt has given Montgomery-Ward a final warning before taking action. The fighting in Italy will remain bogged down until the second front is opened. China may surrender. Predictions: Ambassador Landis will complain about a lack of cooperation from the State Department. An "inside job" has stopped production of alcohol in the northwest. The government will force the textile industry to produce more low-priced civilian clothing...which will be rationed. Margin trading has been stopped on the stock exchange, just as he had predicted. De Gaulle has refused to meet with Roosevelt in Algiers. Preditcions: John L. Lewis will let the Supreme Court decide about portal-to-portal pay. He will not call a strike. The Red Army will attack Berlin very soon. The Japanese fleet is not fighting. Certain Nazis are changing their names so the can resurface after the war. Pearson names 3 of them. Congressman Lyndon Johnson will be a candidate for the House again next year. The Justice Department will "crack down" on Westinghouse next month. Predictions of things to come: The War Department will take 40% of steel allocations to farm machinery. Hearings will begin to make Italy a full partner in the war. Why has the Coast Guard stalled replacing steel life rafts? The British ambassador to the United States, Lord Halifax, will return to England. General Donovan has received details of a war to be foughgt against Russia. This "stupidity" may leak to the Russians. Berlin and Cologne are so damaged that they may never be rebuilt. Discouraging news from San Francisco. Predictions: Senator Gillette, General Frank Hines (head of the Veterans Administration) and General Arnold will resign. There will be no serious unemployment for the next six months. Consumers will not be able to buy a new car or refrigerator for another year. 107738. Drew Pearson. January 1948. ABC net. Sponsored by: Lee Hats. The transcription is marked (in pen), "1949." However, the contents imply an early 1948 broadcast date. The program originates from Washington, D.C. First story: Eisenhower has published a book "just before the Convention"; he's therefore a candidate. The Republican Convention was held in June, 1948, which makes the 1949 date suspect. However, Eisenhower didn't run for president until 1952. The transcription label also seems to be in error when it identifies the recording as coming from WABC (which was owned by CBS at the time). The intent by the labeller was possibly identifying the program as being on the ABC net (which it was). The oil and gas shortage will not end for 2 years. Pearson accuses Senator Thomas of speculating in cotton and lying about it. Prediction: Meat will soon be rationed. Universal Military training: Congress will not approve it. Truman has been appointing too many ex-military men to government positions. Pearson thanks all those who helped with the, "Freedom Train."
