97653. Emperor Hirohito Imperial Rescript On The Termination Of The War. August 13, 1945. NHK. Sponsored by: *. "The Gyokuon-Hoso" ("Jewel Voice Broadcast"). Emperor Hirohito reads the announcement, ending the war. This broadcast was recorded on August 13th or 14th, 1945 in Tokyo and broadcast at 12 Noon (Japan Standard Time), 11:00 P.M. (EWT). The Japanese military was reported to have tried to keep the phonograph record from being broadcast. The recording is said to have been smuggled out of the Imperial Palace in a laundry basket filled with women's underwear. This is the first broadcast ever made by the emperor, and is in a formal and hard-to-understand Japanese dialect. It is not known whether the broadcast was heard in the United States (from Japan) or was rebroadcast in this country...and if so, by whom. A written English translation is on file. Hirohito. 4:40.
