30849. The Land Of The Free. July 16, 1950. Program #7. Harding College, Searcy, Arkansas syndication. Sustaining. "The Land Of The Free (music in: "America The Beautiful" for four bars, music down and voice over) in America, freedom of opportunity is your sacred heritage. The Harding College National Program presents the transcribed story of a great American who used our "Freedom Of Opportunity" to make a contribution to our American way of life (music up and out)." This program was a long running (at least one thousand different programs) series of quarter hour inspirational biographies about famous Americans. The connection of the small college in Searcy, Arkansas with great Americans is not clear, nor is the reason the college spent a considerable amount to produce and syndicate the programs. Although not an obvious recruitment effort, each program is produced under the direction of the president of Harding, Dr. George S. Benson, who comments at the end of each drama. Upon occasion (i. e. program #82), Dr. Benson tells liseners about the seven-hundred-student institution specializing in bible studies and teaching programs. The programs themselves are well-done, with the lead usually receiving the lone acting credit. The brief stories are interesting, sort of a low-budget "The Cavalcade Of America" format.
